The entire time I read this, I wondered had students gathered and protested in the early 1930s when Hitler came to power, would it have prevented his rise to power? Would it have prevented the Holocaust? Those are very big questions and this isn't even all that big of a book, but for me, it's not hard to watch what's going on in this country and not think back to history. After all, history does repeat itself.
This the story of a brother and sister whom in the face of Hitler's tyranny could not stand by and say nothing. Together, they wrote and distributed pamphlets speaking out against Hitler and his regime. The end is not pretty and this brother and sister paid the ultimate price for standing up for what they believe in. But their memory lives on.
This is a truly powerful story. And though it wasn't too little, it was too late.
Let's hope it's not too late for us.
